Californian Tries to Smuggle Meth in Candy Wrappers
Posted By Criminal Defense Editor

To anyone passing by, Rogelio Maruicio Harris' just seemed to have a fetish with Snickers bars. He had dozens of the metallic-wrapped candies in his luggage at the Los Angeles International Airport on January 30th when he attempted to board a flight to Japan. Yet the 34-year-old was apprehended when security realized that the candy bars were holding another "treat" inside: illegal narcotics.

The federal agents at the airport were conducting a routine baggage inspection when they noticed the 45 full-sized Snickers bars in Harris's luggage. Every bar was coated in a milky chocolate substance so that it looked exactly like the tasty treat, but a further test showed that the "candy" inside wasn't a harmful snack. Instead, the bars were packed with methamphetamines.

Authorities discovered 4 pounds of the drug inside the luggage, a stash that is worth approximately $250,000. Harris was immediately charged with drug possession and faces up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted of his crime. His entire life changed in a matter of seconds. If the 34-year-old had been able to make it on his flight to Japan with the Snickers bars in tow, he would have probably been able to evade imprisonment and prosecution. Now, he is relying on expert defense in order to avoid being sent behind bars for a decade.

The courts take drug possession and distribution seriously. Meth is an illegal substance that has damaged thousands of lives, and the government wants to eradicate all use of the narcotic in America. If you have been charged with a drug-related crime like possession, distribution, or use, then you need to talk to a criminal defense lawyer for representation.   Longtime Criminal On-the-Run Caught in Mexico
Posted By Criminal Defense Editor

If you purchased a timeshare in the Cancun, Mexico airport recently, you may have been dealing with a serious wanted criminal. This criminal's name is Vincent Legrend Walters. The Hispanic man fled the United States over 20 years ago after being pursued for drug crimes, kidnapping, and the murder of an unfortunate woman who stood in his way. The man vanished from sight with a small fortune that was gained from a robbery, and has not been locatable until now.

The United States Marshals Service was able to discover Walters, who was on their list of the 15 most wanted fugitives. Instead of discovering their criminal in a dirty deed, the found him peddling time shares in the beautiful resort area of Cancun. A spokesman for the Marshal's service told The New York Times that they would have expected Walters to be working in the illegal drug trade in Mexico. They were shocked to find that he had chosen such an unassuming career.

The Mexican police arrested Mr. Walters on Friday when a fingerprint analysis proved that he was the criminal that U.S. Authorities had been looking for. Mr. Walters holds the record for being on the U.S. Marshal's most wanted list longer than any other criminal. This is in part because he has been successfully elusive during this entire time.

Walters' list of crimes stretches far and wide because of his many drug offenses, but his worst offense may have been when he gagged a woman with a washcloth soaked in deadly chemicals. She was killed in the attack. Walters went off the radar after the murder, managing to elude cops as he made his way from California to Mexico and set up a hiding spot. Right now, police are trying to determine how long Walters' remained involved in the drug trade after his death, so that they can complete an accurate list of charges against him. Talk to a criminal defense lawyer if you have been caught committing a crime that you don't believe are guilty of.

New Mexico Commission Limits Horse Doping
Posted By Criminal Defense Editor

The New Mexico racing Commission recently determined to limit the amount of drugs in the state racing industry. They also decided that they would impose tougher penalties on those who do not adhere to the anti-drug laws. The vote to crack down on horse doping came from a vote that was followed by a public hearing at a New Mexico race track last month. Jockeys, breeders, track managers, and racehorse owners were present for the discussion. The chairman of the racing commission, a man named Robert M. Doughty III, told the New York Times that he hasn't heard one person say that the new limits aren't a good idea.

The New Mexico government was prompted to take this action after an investigative article in The New York Times exposed the state as the most unsafe location for horse racing. They found that many people who drug their horses for better performance were able to get away with it, and more horses were injured on New Mexico tracks than any other state. The state recently joined a national association that will monitor all drug violators. The New Mexico government plans to enforce limits on the amounts of pain suppressants that racers can give their horses.

In some cases, trainers and jockeys will dope their horses with the suppressants so that they do not feel pain, even if they are suffering or ill. This can cause horses to run much too fast and end up in excruciating agony. Recently, The Jockey Club enforced a ban on the use of drugs for any use in racing, and the horses are not permitted to ingest the substances on race day. If you are caught doping racehorses or other animals used in competitive sports, you may be taken to jail for your actions. Talk to a criminal defense lawyer if you have been caught in this offense.

Racehorses Doped with Illegal "Frog Juice"
Posted By Criminal Defense Editor

"Frog juice" is exactly what it sounds like. In South America, creators have come up with a new performance-enhancer that is created using the substance that secretes out of the backs of a South American tree frog. The "frog juice" is not ingested by humans, but has been used frequently to dope racehorses so that they will perform better on the track. Supposedly the potion works as a painkiller. Without any sign of injury or hurt, the horses on the track will push themselves past their breaking point and succeed in the race. The painkiller is more powerful than morphine. More than 30 horses in 4 states have tested positive for the substance, which is being called dermorphin.

The "frog juice" may sound like an enlightening discovery, but it is entirely illegal. The New York Times says that dermorphin has the ability to change the outcomes of a race and cause a horse to win that otherwise wouldn't. Veterinarians say that the horses will push themselves harder if they can't feel pain, and though they often incur serious injuries, they are able to win a race when needed with the aid of these illegal drugs. In the past, racers have also doped their horses with cobra venom to deaden their sense of feeling and avoid a slow race because of pain. Racers have even used these drugs so that they could get a good performance out of an already injured horse on the track.

A further study of dermorphin has shown that it also makes animals hyper. The substance actually gives the animal a sort of euphoria, so that he or she is prepared to run harder and faster. Yet like athletes who take steroids to enhance their chances of winning, horses who take frog juice are jeopardizing the integrity of the sport. In Oklahoma alone, 15 horses have already tested positive for dermorphin. The owners who allow their horses to take the drug may be suspended from horse racing and forced to pay fines or spend time in jail for their dishonesty. If you were caught with illegal performance enhancers in either animal or human sports, then you need a criminal defense lawyer to help you.

Lance Armstrong Charged with Doping Offense
Posted By Criminal Defense Editor

Lance Armstrong, the world-renowned cyclist, was charged with doping today and the action may cost him his seven Tour de France titles. The athlete was immediately banned form competition in triathlons after he was suspected. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency pressed charges after allegedly collecting blood samples from Armstrong in 2009 and 2010. The agency says that these samples were fully consistent with blood manipulation. They suspect that he used EPO and manipulated his samples with blood transfusions. He has never tested positive for doping.

Doping is essentially the term used when athletes use prohibited substances to improve their performance in sports. Illegal steroids or other drugs and enhancers are not allowed in professional athletics and people who disobey the rules are punished. The U.S. government believes that doping creates false integrity, damages image, and can cause the value of the sport to diminish. If allowed, sports would become a race for the best performance enhancers, rather than games of skill. Normally, a person convicted of doping is suspended from their sport for four years because of their offense.

In February, the U.S. Attorney's Office finally dropped the investigation against Armstrong, which was explored in depth. Charges were never pressed. Two of Armstrong's former teammates even testified against him, but their claims were not upheld because there was a lack of evidence. Although the United States Anti-Doping Agency doesn't have the authority to press criminal charges, they do have the ability to expose an athlete's inappropriate use of substances. While Armstrong is vigorously denying allegations, the USADA says that he is part of a massive doping conspiracy that ran from 1998 to 201 and included 10 cyclists. While there are no definite answers yet, the USADA and Armstrong will continue fighting their positions on this issue.

  Woman Sells Drugs Through Mail
Posted By Criminal Defense Editor

It isn't just a crime to sell narcotic drugs illegally, but also to send them in the mail, a fact that a Florida woman learned the hard way this week. Lynette Coleman, 52, had been mailing narcotic pills to a former boyfriend in New Kensington, just a few at a time. He was then selling them on the streets.

When the value of the pills was added up, federal authorities believed the total to be $100,000. Coleman plead guilty to U.S. District Judge Nora Barry Fischer on Wednesday for her part in the crime.

The offenses took place between November 2007 to June 2008. Fischer and ex-boyfriend Howard Schreckengost were indicted by a jury in May on one count of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute oxycodone. The ex-boyfriend is still awaiting his trial.

Schreckengost and Fischer were discovered when one of their packages was intercepted at a post office on June 4, 2008. Inside the package were 490 narcotic pills worth $30 to $40 apiece on the street.

Charged with major drug crimes?  Now is the time to consult with a criminal defense lawyer.
